Based on one of Stephen King’s most well known novels, IT follows a group of kids in the town of Derry, Maine, as they are being threatened by an evil clown named Pennywise that only they can see. They decide to band together and fight back this evil demonic force that begins to terrorize them in unspeakable ways.
Right off the bat, this movie is magnificent. As a horror film, as a coming of age tale, IT is one of the best horror movies we’ve had in years. The casting, the scares, the direction, the editing, the sound and Pennywise—all come together so, so nicely.
Bill Skarskard as Pennywise is absolutely perfect. Without a doubt, he inhabits the role of this terrifying entity flawlessly. He was the perfect actor for the part and has now brought to life one of King’s most memorable villains and is terrifying every time he pops up on screen. The effects used to bring him to life we’re incredible, especially in his eyes, were you feel like you look into the abyss and the abyss looks right back at you.
The kids we’re all great and when a movie is about young kids, all the actors need to be great and everyone here is. The standouts we’re Jaeden Lieberher as Bill, Finn Wolfhard as Richard (Stranger Things) and Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh. They we’re the most developed and the most interesting, but all of them, all seven of them, had amazing chemistry with one another. They bounced back each other really well and you believe that they are friends. It will be curious to see who is cast as their older selves and whether or not it will be tough since we are already so attached to the younger versions of these characters and the adult part of IT is the least interesting part of the story, but I believe that Andy Mushietti who did a wonderful job directing this movie, will deliver a worthy conclusion to the story.
As for the few flaws, there are some horror clichés but it never relies on cheap jump scares. The movie is also long, but it never bored me. It always moved at a quick pace and I was onboard from the opening scene to the closing credits.
Overall, IT is an incredible achievement and a fantastic horror film that has wonderful characters, creepy scares, deep thrills and a memorable villain. Bring on part 2.
