Why Him? Review

Why Him? Is directed by John Hamburg and stars James Franco, Bryan Cranston, Zoey Dutch and Keegan-Michael Kay and tells the story about a father who upon learning that his daughter is dating James Franco goes to visit them for the holidays even though he doesn’t feel like his daughter should date this rich man who is not the idle boyfriend.

James Franco and Bryan Cranston are two of my favorite actors. James Franco has always been an underrated actor. He’s shown that he can do amazing performances (127 hours, 11,2263) and he’s absolutely hilarious in comedies like This is The End and Freaks and Geeks. Bryan Cranston obviously has given us one of the best characters of all time in Breaking Bad and he’s shown his comedic chops in classic TV shows like Seinfeld and Malcolm in the Middle. I’m a huge fan of both actors so naturally I was looking forward to seeing this movie and I was happy too discover that it is one of the best comedies we’ve had in a long time.

This movie won’t break any grounds or reinvent the formula. We’ve seen this plot a thousand times. But the humor and the jokes feel fresh and these actors are great at delivering their lines and the stuff that comes out of their mouths is absolutely hilarious. Everyone has great chemistry with one another. Especially James Franco and Bryan Cranston are incredible with one another and they steal every scene in this movie. They made me laugh all the way through and Keegan-Michael Kay who is hilarious in this film has some of the best scenes training James Franco to be his own bodyguard.

As for flaws, like I already said the movie is predictable and you can kind of predict where it’s going, but is that really a problem when you are invested in the storylines and like the characters? I was absolutely fine with it. The movie is also perhaps fifteen minutes too long and some of the jokes don’t always hit as hard as you want, but it doesn’t happen very often. Most of the jokes hit and they hard and there are really good and unexpected cameos that we’re creative and they made the audience laugh really hard.

Overall, Why Him? Is boosted by great characters, terrific jokes and great performances from the entire cast, which makes it one of the best comedies we’ve had in a long time.
