Well, it’s finally that time of the year folks. Time to list off my top 10 favorite movies of 2015. I have three honorable mentions. First off, Predistination, which was a fantastic science-fiction movie with top notch performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. The film was original, incredibly suspensful and the finale was extremely surprising. Second, we have The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was really fun to watch and while it wasn’t as good as the first Avengers, it still was a great sequel with great action and great characters. Finally, The Revenant, which has an Oscar Worthy performances from Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Hardy and fantastic visuals. While the story sometimes went overboard and was a bit exagerated at times, it was a still an emotinal and heartfelt experience. Without further ado, here are the top 10 best films of 2015, in my opinion, this being the internet and all.
10. Bridge of Spies
Tom Hanks proves once again how he is one of the best actors of our generation in Steven Spielberg’s fantastic cold war Drama Bridge of Spies. This movie was extremely well crafted and incredibly suspenseful. Not a shot was fired throughout the entire runtime and that just proves how much of a master Spielberg is at his craft.
9. The Hateful Eight
Samuel L. Jackson is so great in this movie as is Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, which are the standouts of the entire film. Tarantino directed the hell out of this movie and the cinematography was absolutely gorgeous. While it isn’t the best Tarantino film, it’s still incredibly fun to watch these characters interact as they suspect each other and slowly start turning on each other. The location was claustrophobic, the atmosphere hostile and the violence over the top, which makes me so excited for Tarantino’s next film.
8. Ex Machina
Everything in Ex Machina worked in spades. The acting and special effects we’re top notched, and the storytelling was brilliant. While the ending, without giving anything away, doesn’t make much sense, the rest of the movie works on every level and it will probably end up being a science fiction classic. Alicia Vikander is one of the biggest breakout stars of 2015 and Oscar Isaac and Domhnaal Gleeson we’re both incredible, but it won’t be the last time they will appear on this list.
Incredibly insightful and at times hard to watch because of its subject matter; this movie is fantastic. Rachel Mcadams, Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffolo are all Oscar Worthy in this film and the direction is absolutely wonderful. Tom Mcarthy did an incredible job directing this fantastic heartfelt drama.
Joel Edgerton’s signature directorial debut was superbly well directed and extremely suspenseful and had a lot of things to say. It was emtionally engaging, constintly thrilling and endlessly surprising. Jason Bateman, Joel Edgerton and Rebecca Hall are all Oscar Worthy and the finale of the film will knock your socks off.
5. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
MI5 was so much fun and action packed. It’s breathtaking action from start to finish and Tom Cruise proves once again how he is one of the best actions star today. Rebecca Furguson is so good as Ilsa Faust and one of the best female leads of the year. The film is extremely suspensful and is filled with incredible action set pieces that never stops.
4. Inside out
Pixar hits it out of the park once again with Inside out. It is probably one of the best-animated film of the decade so far. It’s story and characters are absolutely wonderful and the movie is gorgeously animated and the story is so well executed and heartfelt. The characters are extremely funny and relatable and it’s perfect for adults and kids to watch.
3. Mad Max: Fury Road
George Miller returned to his former franchise at full speed with Fury Road, delivering an edge of your seat thrill ride while bringing us incredible action and a visually gorgeous and immersive world in the process. Tom Hardy fills in Mel Gibson’s shoes perfectly as Max and Charlize Theron is the second most badass female of 2015 with Furiousa.
Ridley Scott comes back full force with The Martian, a fantastic film about survival and the human spirit. Matt Damon is Oscar-Worthy in this film and Scott should be nominated for best director. The film almost feels like a documentary in a good way, as you believe that this man really is stuck on Mars and it feels like real life events unfold right in front of you. The Martian was absolutely terrific and one of the best films of Ridley Scott’s entire career.
1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
This movie was an experience. It was exactly what I hoped it would be and more. It was emotional, surprising, deeply moving and completely engaging. Daisey Ridley was a revelation and Harrison Ford was once again amazing as Han Solo. It was great meeting the new characters as well as seeing the familiar faces and the finale of this film immediately made me excited for episode 8.
