20. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
Release Date: May 20
Reason to be excited: The first Neighbors were really funny and had fantastic chemistry between the main players. While comedy sequels often times aren’t good, this could be a surprise like 22 Jump Street.
19. The Jungle Book
Release Date: April 15
Reason to be excited: Disney hasn’t been hitting it out of the park with their live adaptations, but the trailers for this movie have been really good and the special effects look stellar. The voice cast is incredible and Jon Favreau has been a really good director thus far.
Release Date: October 7
Reason to be excited: While Gambit doesn’t need his own movie; Channing Tatum is the right person to play him. There have been no trailers to this movie so far, so we don’t know what the story will be about, but the fact that this movie takes place in the X-Men universe is awesome.
17: Finding Dory
Release Date: June 17
Reason to be excited: Pixar has done great sequels with The Toy Story franchise and crappy sequels with Cars 2. This could go either way, the trailer was fine, but Finding Nemo is without a doubt one of their best films to date.
16. Independence Day: Resurgence
Release Date: July 24th
Reason to be excited: The first Independence was cheesy fun and is one of my guilty pleasures. Was it a great movie? Not really, but it was a lot of dumb fun. Will Smith said no to the sequel, which all right, he doesn’t need to be in it because we have Jeff Goldblum who is even more awesome. The aliens have returned with better technology, while humanity has evolved with the old remnants of the alien technology that have stayed on earth. How is that not awesome?
15. Assassins Creed
Release Date: December 21
Reason to be excited: Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard have both sighed on this movie, so that’s enough to get excited. Even though it’s a video game movie and those have never been good (the first Mortal Kombat is the exception) this movie can change the game.
Release date: June 10
Reason to be excited: The trailer to Warcraft was all right, but Duncan Jones is what sells this giant epic. The director of Moon and Source Code hasn’t done a bad movie yet and it will be interesting to see how he will handle such a big budget movie.
13. The BFG
Release Date: July 1
Reason to be excited: This childhood classic is perfectly right for a big screen adaptation and Steven Spielberg is the best man for the job. Add Ian Mckellan to the cast and this is a instant must see for movie fans.
Release Date: February 12
Reason to be excited: The marketing for DeadPool has been incredible, and the trailers have been really funny and self-aware. Ryan Reynolds looks like he’s going to be the perfect match for the character.
11. Jack Reacher 2: Never Go Back
Release Date: October 21
Reason to be excited: The first Jack Reacher was a great thriller and showed a different side of Tom Cruise. Not much is known about this follow-up except it is based on the novel Never Go Back.
10. Star Trek: Beyond
Release Date: July 22
Reason to be excited: The first trailer wasn’t good and Justin Lin wasn’t the right person to direct this film, but the first two installments we’re so good, that it’s hard not to get excited nonetheless and it’s always great to see Captain Kirk and Spock on screen again.
9. The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist
Release Date: June 10
Reason to be excited: The first Conjuring is probably the best horror film of the decade so far, and the sequel has everything in it’s right place with James Wan coming back to direct with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprising their roles. While Annabelle was awful, this sequel has everything going for it.
8. Doctor Strange
Release Date: November 4
Reason to be excited: While there hasn’t been any trailer yet for this upcoming Marvel film, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Mads Mikkelson as the villain are both big enough reasons to get excited. The film has the potential to be the best standalone Marvel movie to come out thus far.
7. Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them
Release Date: November 18
Reason to be excited: This prequel series sounds interesting, since it takes place 60 years before the events of Philosopher’s Stone. The first teaser trailer was good and makes excited us excited to revisit this world and we could see new and familiar faces like Dumbledore and Hagrid show up. Who knows?
6: Suicide Squad
Release Date: August 5
Reason to be excited: The first trailer that was released at Comiccon was fantastic and the highlights we’re by far Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. The team of villains look menacing and while I don’t think Will Smith was a good choice to play DeadShot, the movie looks like it’s going to be a great follow up to Batman V Superman.
5. Captain America: Civil War
Release Date: May 6
Reason to be excited: The trailer to Civil War was awesome and have read the comic book it’s impossible not to get excited for this movie. The Russo Brothers who directed Winter Soldier are coming back which is so exciting. This could end up being the best film of the marvel cinematic universe.
4. Bourne 5
Release Date: July 5
Reason to be excited: The Bourne Legacy was a bad movie, but Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon are teaming up again to do Bourne 5, which is enough to get excited. The Bourne franchise is one of the best action franchises ever, and let’s hope that the fifth installment delivers.
3. X-Men Apocalypse
Release Date: May 27
Reason to be excited: The first trailer was great and Oscar Isaac looks incredible as Apocalypse, the big baddy of the X-Men universe. The new cast looks interesting and it’s the first time we see an X-Men trailer without Wolverine in it.
2. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
Release Date: March 25
Reason to be excited: The new trailer was a terrible trailer, but that Comiccon trailer was one of the best of the year and it doesn’t mean we can’t still be excited for the two biggest superheroes in the same movie for the first time ever. Ben Affleck seems like he’s going to be a great Batman and Henri Cavill looks still great as Superman. The movie looks a bit artificial and bloated, but I’m crossing my fingers hoping that it will be awesome and that Zack Snyder delivers like he did with Man of Steel and Watchmen.
1. Star Wars: Rogue One
Release Date: December 16
Reason to be excited: With The Force Awakens being as incredible as it was, Rogue One has big shoes to fill. Gareth Edward described this movie as a war film. The movie takes place between episode 3 and 4, where the rebellion is about to form and Darth Vader still lives. It will also show how the rebels got the plans to the Death Star, which is a pivotal moment in the entire Star Wars saga.
