Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens Trailer Breakdown

The Star Wars trailer is finally here and it’s awesome. I didn’t think we’d get as much as we did since the movie is still a year away but I was satisfied with this trailer and it did its job. It teased us and it leaves a hundred different questions and begging for more which is what a trailer should do. I also loved the sense of urgency of all the characters. It seems like the movie is going to be dark and gritty in a good way, and I also love the fact that every scene features a robotic sound of some kind from the original trilogy, which is just nostalgic and plain awesome.

Here are a couple of questions that the trailer raised and a few things that are on everyone’s mind:

Why is John Boyega wearing a Storm Trooper outfit?
First off, we get a voiceover, saying that there has been an awakening, have you felt it? We then get a shot of what seems to be Tatooine, and of John Boyega who is in a Storm Trooper outfit. This already raises a couple of questions. Is he dressed up like this for a secret mission or is he working with the empire? I also love just before this scene cuts to black we get to hear the droids sounds again that belonged to the Empire.

The Storm Troopers have upgraded their uniform
Since the story takes place thirty years into the future, it makes perfect sense that the Storm Troopers costumes look more high-tech than when we last saw them. Hopefully they can aim better now.

New Droids
We also get a shot of a new weird looking droid which seems to be riding some kind of sphere. It’s obvious that Episode 7 had to have new droids of some kind, and this one has a cool design, and I’m sure it’s just the first of many droids that we’ll get to see in the film.

Oscar Isaac is driving an X-wing
We also get a shot of the new X-Wings that are flying above the water, and the ships seem to have gone through hell. They look dirty and filthy, and I love that about this trailer is how much detailed there is. It’s also great to see Oscar Isaac driving one who is an incredible actor and he seems to be the new Wedge Antilles of the Rogue Squadron crew.

Is Daisey Ridley playing Mara Jade, Jaina Solo or someone else?
We get a shot of Daisey Ridley on Tatooine who is riding some sort of new speeder. She seems to be in a hurry, and my guess is that she is a new Jedi of some kind. She looks that she could be playing Mara Jade, even though she is a bit too young for Mark Hamill (she becomes Luke’s wife in the expanded universe). Or she could be playing Jaina Solo, Han and Leia’s daughter and twin sister to Jaqen Solo. If I had to put my money on is that she’s definitely a Jedi and probably playing Jaina Solo, but I want Mara Jade to be in the movie so badly because she is such a cool and fascinating character. Who knows?

Who is the new Sith?
We don’t know much about the new villain (one out of many?) except that he has a new Lightsaber which looks both awesome and weird at the same time. Can’t he cut his hand off with the laser beams coming out of his hilt? And who is he? Is he Adam Driver? That’s probably my guess, either him or Max Von Sydow. He looks menacing, but I keep wondering why he draws out his Lightsaber when there doesn’t seem to be anything around him. Maybe he sensed danger coming.

The dark side and the light
But for my money, the best part of the trailer is after the line The dark side and the light is spoken and we got a brilliant shot of the Millenium Falcon flying through the sky with all its glory while it’s being chased by Tie Fighters on Tatooine, heading to space.

No shots of space?
There are no shots of space in this trailer, but there’s no need to be worried. Of course we’re going to space. Like I already mentioned, this is a 90 seconds trailer and the movie is still a year away. I like the fact that we see the Millenium Falcon fly so close to the ground like that. It’s badass.

Who is doing the voiceover and what does it mean?
The voice might be provided by Andy Serkis (Gollum, Ceaser) or Max Von Sidow perhaps. But what do the lines mean and to whom are they directed too? What did he mean by saying: There has been an awakening, have you left it? The dark force and the light. Who is he talking too? What is he talking about? Has the force really been sleeping for 30 years? Has Luke build a Jedi academy? Was he talking about the Sith?

Where are Luke, Han and Leia?
That’s the only criticism of the trailer I have is that we don’t see Luke, Han and Leia. But at the same time in some weird way it’s a positive since I liked the fact that they focused on the new cast members. Maybe Disney will release another trailer that will focus only on the old cast members?

This teaser was fantastic and it did exactly what it’s supposed to do. It teased us, and right now, I love what I’m seeing and I can’t stop watching it which is the goal of a teaser trailer. The next one will probably focus more on the old cast members and I can’t wait for it to arrive, and December 2015 can’t arrive soon enough. It is my most anticipated movie of 2015, and the Force has awoken indeed.
