Star Wars news just keeps on coming. Now that we know J.J. Abrams is directing Star Wars episode VII and that the script will be written by Lawrence Kasden who wrote the script for Empire Strikes Back, we now have confirmation that Rian Johnson is going to write and direct episode VIII and at least write the script for episode IX. Rian Johnson is a fantastic choice since he has done science-fiction before with Looper which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis and has done the film neo-noir thriller film Brick which also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He’s also directed three amazing episodes of Breaking Bad, “Fly”, “Fifty One” and Ozymandias (one of my personal favorites of the series). Johnson is an incredible storyteller and has a unique visual style that will bring a great new voice to the franchise and I can’t see what’s in store for future Star Wars movies.
Now that we’ve all got these diverse and extremely different talented directors on board with Gareth Edwards (Godzilla 2014 remake) to helm the first Star Wars spinoff and Chronicle director Josh Trank to direct a second spin-off film, you have to wonder who is next. Steven Spielberg perhaps? It’s almost inevitable since him and George Lucas are pals and they’ve already collaborated together on Indiana Jones and it’s safe to say that he has a great history with sci-fi. My top three contenders to direct Star Wars spin-offs would have to be Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Christopher Nolan (who is my favorite director). Just imagine him directing a Star Wars movie! I guess we’ll see what he can do with outer space after Interstellar comes out. I’m sure that it’s going to be nothing short of brilliant.
There is no doubt that the Star Wars franchise is heading in the right direction since Disney is going after talented people and planning ahead making sure that all the pieces are in place. I think that they’ve given us more than enough reasons to be optimistic about what’s in store. December 2015 can’t arrive fast enough!
