Well, it was bound to happen eventually. Warner Brothers has found their director for Justice League and it’s none other than Zack Snyder director of Watchmen, 300, Sucker Punch, Man of Steel (and the upcoming Batman vs. Superman which still doesn’t have a proper title) set to come out in 2016. Since Man of steel 2 was pushed back an entire year, many have speculated that the reason was that the studio was planning to shoot Man of Steel 2 and Justice League back to back. If this is the case, Justice League will probably be released in 2017 or late 2018. But there hasn’t been any confirmation as of late by Warner Brothers that this is the route that they are actually going to take. For all we know, they might be planning a Wonder Woman movie, a Flash standalone and a Green Lantern reboot before Justice League. Anything is possible.
As for Zack Snyder directing Justice League, I think it’s a smart choice. Perhaps not the best choice, but a safe bet since he has a background in the comic book genre and is familiar with the materiel. He did the best job humanly possible with Watchmen since the movie was filled with a bunch of different characters and he did a great job making all of them relevant. Man of Steel was my favorite superhero film of last year. It was darker and grittier than the Christopher Reeve’s Superman films and it successfully succeeded in retelling the origins story where The Amazing Spiderman 2 failed at (in my opinion).
Zack Snyder is an incredible visual director even though he sometimes lacks the substance and depth that The Dark Knight trilogy had. Until now, he’s had more hits than misses (Sucker Punch was a visual extravaganza of awesomeness but lacked a good storyline, interesting characters to relate to and the script was terrible) but the rest of his movies have all been great. But having said all that, I think that Ben Affleck would have been the perfect choice to direct Justice League. Ben Affleck is Warner Brother’s golden boy right now since he’s won them best picture for Argo which he directed and also starred in. A lot of people we’re speculating that he had a deal with WB not just to star as Batman but directing Justice League as well. Now that this is not the case, I am convinced that he will indeed direct some of the future Batman standalone movies. After Gone Baby Gone, The Town and now Argo, Affleck has proved that he is one of the most talented directors in the business. I think he would have been a perfect choice for Justice League and it would have given someone else the chance to direct a DC property other than Snyder and Nolan.
But like I said Zack Snyder is a smart choice and I am not at all opposed to the decision of him directing Justice League, even though sometimes it happens that when a director stays on the same franchise too long sometimes they run out of creativity (Sam Raimi director of Spiderman 3) and other times it’s better to remain with the same director for all 3 movies (Brett Ratner taking over for X-men 3).
Man of Steel 2 will tell us whether or not Zack Snyder was the right choice to direct Justice League. Until then, only time will tell. Justice League stars as of yet, Henri Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher.
